Keeping track of your estimated payments doesn't need to be complicated. Making these payments has never been easier!
What Are Estimated Taxes?
You may have to make estimated tax payments if:
* The amount of income tax withheld from your salary or pension is less than 80% of your tax liability for the year or
* You receive interest, dividends, alimony, self-employment income, capital gains, prizes, and awards.
If you are in business for yourself, you generally need to make estimated tax payments. Estimated tax is used to pay not only income tax but also other taxes, such as self-employment tax and alternative minimum tax.
You may have to pay a penalty if you don't pay enough tax through withholding and estimated tax payments. You also may have to pay a penalty if your estimated tax payments are late, even if you are due a refund when you file your tax return.
Estimated tax requirements differ for farmers, fishermen, and certain higher-income taxpayers.
Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax, provides more information about these special estimated tax rules and recent developments.
Should I Make Estimated Tax Payments?
Taxes must be paid as you earn or receive income during the year. You generally need to make estimated tax payments if:
* The amount of income tax withheld from your salary or pension is not enough or
* You are in business for yourself or
* The expected tax due on your taxable income not subject to withholding is more than $400.
Due Dates
You need to pay at least 80% of your annual income tax liability before you file your return for the year.
Farmers and fishermen generally need to pay at least two-thirds (66.67%) rather than 80%.
